Community Youth Project

The  Community Youth Project, more commonly known as CYP, was founded in 2007 at St. John’s Church, Sandwich.   They applied for a Cape Cod Youth Empowerment Initiative grant through UMASS Donahue Institute and Compassion Massachusetts. This federal money was to enable capacity building and create a sustainable or long-term project. For example, the money received is being used to hire consultants that have taught members how to write grants, fundraise, create a stable board of directors, and formulate a vision and mission statement. It also allowed CYP to purchase equipment that was necessary for their events (such as band nights, community volunteer projects, CAPE FIERCE events, etc.). The grant introduced 20 non-profit organizations to each other, who share resources, and provide support. As a result, CYP gained several members from the Sandwich, Mashpee, and Barnstable area on their board of directors who now represent students from Sandwich High School (HS), Mashpee HS, Upper Cape Tech School, Barnstable H.S., and Cape Cod Tech (Harwich). The board is entirely youth led (with adult adviser’s support).

 
CYP is in the process of growing their organization.  They hope to elicit growth in their membership, build community connections and resources, engage in relationship building with community leaders (who share interest in their vision and mission), build an eco friendly community center, and promote social change. As well, CYP is focused on providing young people alternatives and choices to prevent at risk behaviors, build community, and increase connectedness among young people who come from different towns on the Cape.

One of the chief complaints of the young people on the Cape is a need for change.
That is why CYP started their community project. CYP started building their organization that is youth led and directed, so that they can create a voice for themselves in their community, and share their vision with other youth.  CYP wants to offer opportunities for their friends so that they stop doing drugs, and provide choices to stop engaging in other risky behaviors.
